TRUTH AND JUSTICE

A.H. Tammsaare is considered to be one of Estonia’s greatest writers, and the Truth and Justice (Estonian: Tõde ja õigus) pentalogy is considered to be a foundational Estonian text, capturing the country as it evolves from a province of the Russian empire into an independent nation.

Tammsaare‘s work shows influence from the Russian writers of the 19th century as well as Oscar Wilde, Knut Hamsun and André Gide. In 2018, we translated his 1935 novel I Loved A German (Ma armastasin sakslast).

The first book in the Truth and Justice epic was adapted for film in 2019. Receiving widespread critical acclaim, it became the most-watched film in Estonian cinemas and was shortlisted for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.

We are publishing the full pentalogy over the coming years. With plans to publish yearly until 2025, Vargamäe (vol I) was published in 2019 and, following delays, the highly anticipated Indrek (vol II) was published in 2022.
